Black Male College Explorers Program has a history of success

For three decades, Florida A&M University’s Black Male College Explorers Program has worked to prepare Black males to channel potential into greatness, and greatness into success. Through the College of Education, the prevention/intervention program has changed the lives of several thousands of students since its inception in the early 1990’s. Under, then, University President Dr. Frederick S. Humphries’ umbrella of leadership, BMCEP was created and funded with a grant by the Florida Legislature. The grant funded the program annually for several years along with state appropriation funds and support from private donations. Its blueprint was crafted to prevent “at-risk” Black males from dropping out of high school, direct a path towards college admission, and increase their chances of securing a college degree. Participants are middle and high school students who spend six weeks of intensive academic preparation in the areas of English, mathematics, science, African-American studies, and technology. Professional development activities are also integrated including counseling, seminars, and workshops.

The BMCEP’s success is documented by the number of participant stories and FAMU’s program expansion to other historically black colleges and university campuses throughout Florida, including Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, and Florida Memorial University.
